Residents in Italy need to file tax returns and make payment on account for the taxes due in their
first full year of residency in Italy.
The Italian tax year runs from 1st January to 31st December (unlike the UK one which runs from
6th April to 5th April). Payment of tax for the year in question is due in two (estimated) amounts, one on 30th June and
the other on 30th November. The filing of the return is due by 31st October of the following year. Any adjustmetns to
payments made are finalised at his time.
So for the 2006 tax year, payments on account should have been made on 30th June 2006 and 30th November 2006, and the tax
return is due to be filed by 31st October 2007. Interest is charged on any late payments, so if you were resident in
Italy for the 2006 tax year and have not made the payments you need to pay close attention to this matter now.
Tax returns can be obtained from your local tax office (ufficio entrata) or by visiting (and paying) a
commercialista to complete and file the return for you.
