An unfortunate few (and we hope it is a few) buyers of Puglian property have discovered too late that the property they have bought is abusivo(built without planning permission). Most eventually work their way through the legal and administrative maze and have the property "sanitised" (retropsective planning permission obtained). Others throw up their hands and decide not to worry about it. After all there is no chance the property will be demolished is there?
One agency told us ... " these and many other houses have been constructed 10-20-30 years ago - there is no possibility for them to be knocked down." and again "If they don't give the ok in a year they will in two - there is no way they will start knocking down houses that are standing for the past 30 years."
The paperwork on our own house is just about completed and we have been told that we will have the documentation in the next few weeks. Just as well, when we were chatting with a Puglia Uncovered member just last week about abusivo buildings, our friend remembered a situation in Bari where the towers of Punti Perotti, built illegally, were ordered to be demolished.
This may be an extreme example but yet another warning, when buying property in Puglia (or anywhere else for that matter) caveat emptor ("Let the buyer beware") still holds good! Last update : 04-05-2007 05:00
