Sadly my daughter and I have had to leave our newly renovated villa in Puglia as I became very homesick and can you believe missing my career. Although my daughter left Italy fluent in the language and I myself having made many beautiful Italian friends, I wish to bring to your readers attention to what happened to us when we returned to the UK with our Italian cat Lucy.
Like many of you who have settled in Italy we inherited two stray kittens whom we nurtured to adulthood. When we arrived we bought Lucy a pitch black Persian cat who was definitely the princess in the family. Our two boisterous Labradors came with us to Italy from the UK and were driven back over Easter through the boarders without any problems. When my husband drove through with Lucy in February 08, we were led to believe that all her documentation was up to scratch and all her vaccinations were up to date. Sadly when my husband reached Calais, it transpired that the vet had not completed the documentation correctly, and had in fact given me the tick and tapeworm medicine to administer to her 24 - 48 hours prior to her arrival in the UK. Innocently I administered the medication, but because it was not signed for in the correct part of her pet travel passport, she was confiscated and ended up in a pet hotel in the middle of a field in France. This was the most traumatic time of our lives and now although she is back in the UK, she is in quarantine until 13 August 08. Added to that, we have monthly £200 fees to pay for the privilege. All because the vet 'didn't know'. Of course we are angry and upset, and are considering legal action, but please be warned. Be sure that you can trust your vet. by Shiela Willoughby Last update : 10-09-2009 16:32
